PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To attain power saving, cost reduction, and frame narrowing when achieving bidirectional cascade transmission. SOLUTION: In a panel display device, when display drive units A1, A2, A3 of cascade construction take in display data sequentially sent from a controller 2, in the forward direction operating mode, the drive units other than the final stage take in self-addressed data when receiving a start signal and send out the start signal in the forward direction to the drive unit of the following stage, and the final stage drive unit takes in self-addressed data when receiving the start signal. In the backward direction operation mode, the forward direction signal and data take-in are not performed in the cascade transmission of data, but on receiving the start signal, the final stage drive unit takes in the self-addressed data and sends out an enable signal in the backward direction to the drive unit of the preceding stage, and the drive units other than the final stage one take in the self-addressed data on receiving the start signal and send out the enable signal in the backward direction to the preceding driving device.
