PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a polymer comprising a (meth)acrylic acid monomer as a molecular chain and having a reactive functional group at its end, and a method for producing an environment-friendly (meth)acrylic acid polymer which does not substantially use an aromatic hydrocarbon compound that can possibly cause environmental problems as a diluent in a production process and does not contain an aromatic solvent. SOLUTION: The (meth)acrylic acid polymer having no aromatic hydrocarbon compound and having the reactive functional group at its end is produced by (1) performing the atom transfer radical polymerization by using a non-aromatic hydrocarbon-based solvent (solvent A) having a specific inductive capacity of≥10, (2) bringing a reactive mixture into contact with oxygen under the presence of the solvent A at a final point of the process of the atom transfer radical polymerization, and then (3) removing a polymerization catalyst by using non-aromatic hydrocarbon-based solvent (solvent B) having a relative permittivity of more than 4 and less than 20 (solvent B) as a diluent solvent.
