PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a thin film pigment, excellent in surface evenness and capable of readily carrying out shape control. SOLUTION: The method for producing the thin film pigment comprises a step for forming a water-soluble or oil-soluble underlayer 2 having a prescribed pattern form on a substrate 1, a step for forming a thin film 3 composed of a metal or a metal compound on the substrate 1 and a step for immersing the substrate 1 into water or oil to dissolve the underlayer 2, separating the thin piece 3A composed of the metal or the metal compound from the substrate 1 to recover the thin piece 3A. According to the present invention, the metal thin piece 3A having a desired shape can readily be produced at a low cost by arbitrarily setting a pattern shape of the underlayer 2, and surface evenness of the thin piece can be kept in a high level, because mechanical grinding step such as pulverization step is not applied.
