A display device operated by sub-field process and a method for displaying images in the display device are provided to enhance gray scale characteristics by adjusting the number of sub-fields based on the number of sustain pulses. A display device includes first, second, and third blocks(4,5,7). The first block calculates the APL(Average Picture Level) of images set by image signals. The second block converts the image signal into sub-field coding data and outputs the sub-field coding data to a display panel. The third block controls the number of the display gray scales of the sub-field coding data based on the APL. The third block sets the number of the display gray scales of the sub-field coding data greater than the number of the display gray scales in an APL over a predetermined level when the APL is less than the predetermined level. |
