<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a water-based ink composition for writing materials able to form clear handwritings even when written not only on a paper surface but also on a nonabsorbing surface such as a resin film or the like, and a marking pen holding the same. <P>SOLUTION: The water-based ink composition for writing materials comprises at least a colorant, water and a glyceryl monoalkyl ether expressed by formula (1): R-O-CH<SB>2</SB>-CHOH-CH<SB>2</SB>OH (1) (wherein R expresses a 3-14C saturated alkyl group or unsaturated alkyl group).
