Acrylonitrile is obtained by reacting acetylene with hydrocyanic acid at 70 DEG to 110 DEG C. and 1 to 4 atmospheres absolute in aqueous cuprous complex salt solutions, the catalyst activity being retained by maintaining in the solution a molar ratio of cuprous chloride to the sum of all other complex formers of at least 1:1; a content of free hydrochloric acid of 0.2 to 3.5%; and a cyanide content of at most 15% mol calculated on the moles of copper, and corresponding to at most 1.6%.
