PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a degradation determining method for cellulose fibers, capable of determining the extent of degradation with full accuracy, even if a small amount of the cellulose fibers is used as a sample amount. SOLUTION: In the method, a refractive index of the cellulose fiber is acquired by using a Becke's line method or a wavelength-sweep type Becke's line method, and the degradation degree is determined directly from the refractive index, or an average polymerization degree is obtained from the refractive index, and then the degradation degree is determined from the average polymerization degree. Alternatively, dispersed colors of the cellulose fiber are observed by using a dispersing dyeing method, an average matched wavelength is calculated by digitizing/analyzing the dispersed colors, and the degradation degree is obtained from the matched wavelength, or the average degree of polymerization is obtained from the average matched wavelength, thereby determining the degradation degree.
