<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a direct methanol fuel cell capable of using fuel having higher methanol concentration by suppressing the diffusion of water from an anode to a cathode. <P>SOLUTION: The direct methanol fuel cell has an electrolyte membrane 21, an anode catalyst layer 22, a cathode catalyst layer 23, dense water repellent layers 26, 28 of water repellent nature, and porous gas diffusion layers 25, 27.
