PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve userfriendliness in an animation reproducing apparatus which displays a reduced thumbnail image and displays thumbnails for selecting a file from among a plurality of animation files. SOLUTION: The animation reproducing apparatus comprises a reading unit 2 for reading a recording medium 100; a decoder 3 for decoding an animation file read by the reading unit 2; an image compression unit 4 for compressing the decoded animation; a memory 50 for temporarily recording the data generated by the image compression unit 4 and collecting thumbnail images; a memory I/F 5 for operating recording and reading of the memory 50; an OSD compositing unit 6, which composes and outputs a background image and a thumbnail image; and a D/A converter 7. When a predetermined input is received from a predetermined remote controller 80, an animation file selected by a thumbnail image is sequentially recorded in the memory I/F 5, while images the frames of the selected image file are skippeed at a predetermined interval width at each sampling time, so that while thumbnail images are displayed, fast forwarding and rewinding can be performed.
