PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To measure the width of a round bar hot material with high precision. SOLUTION: The brightness distribution of a hot material Mc is measured by CCD cameras 1, 2 in the direction traversing it. A measuring apparatus 3 detects a maximum value of the brightness distribution in the intermediate area excluding at least both ends areas of the brightness distribution, adjusts detection sensitivity so that the maximum value becomes a first set value, and calculates the width of the hot material on the basis of a range in which brightness distribution after the sensitivity adjustment exceeds a second set value set to be lower than the first set value.
