A head restraint 36 for a vehicle seat 34 comprises at least one lateral portion 38, 40 movable relative to a central portion. An actuator is operable to move the at least one lateral portion out of a lateral line of sight of an occupant in response to an input from the vehicle. The head restraint may comprise two lateral portions. The input may be generated by the occupant moving a gear shifter 44 into reverse or actuating turn indicators 50. The actuator may comprise a rotary solenoid (60, Fig. 2) connected to a crank mechanism (71 -75, Fig. 2) to move the lateral portions. The lateral portions may be mounted on tracks (64-67, Fig. 2) on the central portion and may be retractable into the central portion. Alternatively the lateral portions may be movable laterally and rearward (Fig. 6) or pivotally (Fig. 8) relative to the central portion. In a further alternative, movable lateral portions (140, 142, Fig. 9) may be moved vertically relative to stationary lateral portions (136, 138, Fig. 9). Also disclosed is a head restraint (78, Fig. 5) which is movable laterally relative to a mounting rod (79, Fig. 5) in response to an input from the vehicle. |
