A first portion of content is securely delivered directly to a receiver by a content validator and a second, larger portion of the content is delivered to the receiver separately, for example via a peer-to-peer network. The second portion cannot be accessed unless the receiver has also correctly received the first portion. The content validator may validate the receiver prior to delivering the first portion of content and may encrypt the first portion using a hardware id of the receiver. Consequently only an authorised receiver is able to access the first portion and thus gain access to the second, larger portion of content. An advantage of delivering the second portion of content via a peer-to-peer network is that many peers may share the bandwidth required to distribute the majority of the content to users, taking the pressure off the content provider. The second portion of content may also be encrypted using a global encryption key.
