A mechanism for adjusting the angle of tilt of a pivotally mounted vehicle seat backrest comprises an apertured track 9 attached to a vehicle body, and a housing 7 which can be attached to the seat backrest and which houses a cam operated sliding bolt 4 that selectively engages one of the holes on the track 9 thereby allowing the inclination of the backrest to be adjusted. The bolt 4 is moved into and out of engagement with the track by a rotating cam 3 which is connected to an independent release mechanism, e.g. a pushbutton 1, preferably via trigger 2. The rotating cam 3 is acted upon by a spring 6 which biases the cam to a position in which the bolt 4 engages the track 9. A striker 8 may be attached to the housing so that the housing can be selectively engaged with the backrest. The cam is preferably defined by a curved channel engaged by a peg projecting from the side of the bolt. The bolt 4 may be slidably mounted within a guide 5. |
