Nicotine is absorbed systemically from the intestine in therapeutic amounts for the treatment of nicotine responsive conditions, particularly in-flammatory skin conditions, Alzheimer's disease, schizophrenia, Parkinson's disease, Tourette's syn-drome, depression and to assist in the cessation of smoking. The nicotine is ideally delivered for ab-sorption from the colon as a nicotine-polyacrylate complex in a sustained and delayed released enteric coated capsule. In this way, the high peak plasma levels, which normally give rise to side-effects as-sociated with nicotine are reduced.
