A surface emitting device is provided to shorten the time required for vacuum, exhaust and diffusion of mercury by forming a slit on one end of each discharge channel, thereby improving light emission efficiency of the device. A lamp body for generating and emitting light has plural discharge channels(31) divided into plural discharge spaces. An electrode(30) applies a discharge voltage to the lamp body, and an exhaust line(60) is formed on a flange(40) of the lamp body. The discharge channel and the exhaust line communicate with each other by a slit(50). The lamp body has an upper board and a lower board spaced apart from the upper board, and the space between the upper and lower boards is defined by plural discharge space partitions to form the discharge channel.
