The present invention provides that ERRgamma is both a breast cancer biomarker and a breast cancer treatment target. A high ERRgamma level in breast cancer cells indicates good prognosis. A high level of ERRgamma in breast tissue suspected of being cancerous is indicative of breast cancer. Analyzing ERRgamma status and optionally along with the status of ERalpha can help breast cancer patients make treatment choices. Furthermore, breast cancer can be treated by decreasing ERRgamma activity in breast cancer cells.
