998,124. Welding by pressure. P. S. KNUDSEN, and E. JOHANSEN. April 16, 1962 [April 17, 1961], No. 14688/62. Heading B3R. In ultrasonic cold-welding two objects a weld exceeding in extent a single spot weld is produced by bringing one of the objects into direct contact with a sonic head or with a sonotrode rigid with the sonic head over the total extent of the weld and applying oscillations to the object in any direction other than at right angles to the abutting surfaces of the object. The flanges 68, Fig. 3, of a rectangular section metal container to be closed are arranged between a horizontal sonotrode 58 carried on a holder 44 adjustably supported on an upright 42 and a pressure head 48 carried on a handoperated lever 50 pivoted on a support from the holder 44. The vibrator for the sonotrode 58 is also carried by the holder 44. In an embodiment for simultaneously sealing a cover to a cylindrical container and welding the side seam of the folded sheet container, the container is supported on the sonotrode 74, Fig. 6, forming a mandrel and a pressure head 80 having an annular flange 82 to press against the cover and a downwardly extending finger 84 to press against the side seam is swung down by operation of a cam 98. Separate pressure heads may be provided for the two welds. In welding a cover to a. container already having a bottom the latter is supported on a bracket and the cover is contacted by a recessed sonotrode. For welding a recessed cover to a container the sonotrode is annular and supports the flange on the container, the cover being urged downwardly by a pressure head. The latter member may alternatively be the sonotrode. In welding two sheet metal members they are positioned between a plate on an hydraulic jack and a plate forming a sonotrode. A portable apparatus for welding a cover 152, Fig. 11, to a ball-bearing 154 comprises a sonotrode 148 having an annular flange 150, a head 144 and a vibrator 146. |
