A method for transmitting and receiving a packet having a variable length using a hybrid automatic repeat request is provided to reduce power consumption when a control channel is not received by decoding a packet with a subsequent sub packet. A method for transmitting and receiving a plurality of sub packets using a hybrid automatic repeat request includes the steps of: forming an encoded data packet generated by encoding transmitting information; generating the at least one sub packet having a predetermined length and a packet identifier from the encoded data packet; and transmitting a first sub packet of the at least one sub packet, wherein the first sub packet has a predetermined sub packet identifier indicating a beginning point of the sub packet transmission.
