Provided is a semiconductor light emitting device having a light intensity difference reducing layer between an ultraviolet semiconductor light emitting element and a wavelength converting material layer. A backlight composed of such semiconductor light emitting device, and a display device are also provided. The LED light emitting device has improved light emission uniformity, reduced luminance nonuniformity and reduced chromaticity nonuniformity. The light emitting device is applicable to various types of display devices, preferably, to display devices for devices which require especially reduction in sizes, weight, thickness and power consumption, high luminance and excellent color rendering properties, such as cellular phones, portable information terminals, electronic dictionaries, digital cameras, computers, liquid crystal TVs and peripheral devices for such devices.
