PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily remove foreign matter sticking on an image sensor in an image scanner. SOLUTION: The image reader 1 comprises a transparent original table 2, a contact type image sensor 3 which scans an image of a document, an image sensor driving mechanism 4 which drives the contact type image sensor 3, a foreign matter removing device 5 which removes foreign matter on the contact type image sensor 3, a memory 6 which stores image data etc., and a CPU 7. The CPU 7 compares an image stored in the memory 6 with the scanned image, and moves the contact image sensor 3 to the position of the foreign matter removing device 5 by the image sensor driving mechanism 4 when the home position 20 of the contact type image sensor 3 can not be recognized. An image scan surface is wiped with a brush of the foreign matter removing device 5, so the foreign matter can easily be removed. COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT
