PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a general solution for transmitting multilingual subtitles with a video program in the MPEG2 environment, in particular, in a method of simultaneously transmitting video signal and encoded data representing graphic videos. SOLUTION: The graphic videos are rectangular regions within the active video area. They are transmitted in a form of bitmaps. The present invention not only allows character fonts or the size to be displayed, but also the definition of e.g. a program provider's logo. The encoded data include a time stamp to specify the time at which a subtitle is to be displayed.
