PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium having a magnetic layer which is high in packing density and is smooth, and to provide its manufacturing method. SOLUTION: The method for manufacturing the magnetic recording medium arranged with the magnetic layer on one major face side of a non-magnetic support includes a magnetic layer forming step of forming a magnetic coating film by applying a magnetic coating material containing magnetic powder, a first binder resin, and a first solvent on the one major face side of the non-magnetic support, and subjecting the magnetic powder included in the magnetic coating material to magnetic field orientation in a prescribed direction while performing drying treatment of removing the first solvent from the magnetic coating material for a prescribed period. A constant rate drying period when the surface temperature Ts of the magnetic coating film is approximately constant is included in the prescribed period and the constant rate drying period is≥0.2 sec.
