PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing lactic acid using a yeast strain having lactic acid synthesizing potency and capable of efficiently improving the yield of lactic acid. SOLUTION: The invention provides a method for producing lactic acid by culturing a yeast strain having lactic acid synthesizing potency using a medium containing a saturated fatty acid or unsaturated fatty acid. The yeast strain having lactic acid synthesizing potency is e.g. a strain having lactic acid synthesizing potency acquired by introducing a lactic acid synthetase (lactic acid dehydrogenase) gene, and the fatty acid is e.g. oleic acid, an oleic acid derivative or a mixture of the acid, etc., with other fatty acids.
