A surface-treating appliance (1) comprises a main body (2), a surface-treating head (10) and a support assembly (14). The support assembly (14) is moveable out of a supporting position in which it supports the main body (2) by a user performing a plurality of steps - for example, by depressing a pedal (22), then tilting the main body (2) by pulling the handle (3). This arrangement reduces the likelihood of accidental release of the support assembly (14) from its supporting position. For example, if the user depresses the pedal (22) alone, or only pulls on the handle (3), the support assembly (14) remains in its supporting position.
