PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader capable of transmitting facsimile even when a personal computer freezes and of receiving facsimile even when a power source of the personal computer is off. SOLUTION: A main control part 1 of a scanner device 20 receives image data with transmission instruction information including address information of a partner device from a personal computer 20 to store the image data in an image memory 8, transmits the image data to the partner device to transmit the image data by facsimile and displays the image data by a transmission completion indicator 4a on completion of transmission. The main control part 1 receives the image data from the partner device by facsimile, store the image data in the image memory 8, displays the image data by a reception termination indicator 4b on completion of reception, transmits a facsimile reception notification message to a personal computer 30, converts the stored image data into image data of a prescribed form when a response signal to the facsimile reception notification message is received and after that, transmits the converted image data to the personal computer 30.
