PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display device for electrically reading a display state from a display panel, holding the display state when power supply is stopped and capable of switching an acquisition source of display data according to whether electric power is supplied or not. SOLUTION: The display device according to the present invention includes the display panel 1 which has memory property, a read means 3 of electrically reading the display state, and a storage means 4. This display device can switch the acquisition source of display data from the storage means 4 to the display panel 1 only at the time of first display after the power supply recovers. Consequently, even when the power supply to the display device is interrupted and display data in the storage means 4 are lost, the display data can be read out of the display panel 1 at the point of time of recovery of the power supply. Consequently, since the need for a battery for backup in case of a power failure is eliminated and a nonvolatile storage medium need not be mounted newly, the display device can be made at a low cost and can be made compact.
