PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a wheel drive unit where the mode of a power transmission mechanism is prevented from being switched against the will of the user of a mobile object while keeping a switch operation part rotatable with respect to a lever, and to provide a wheelchair. SOLUTION: When the lever 12 is rocked, rotatory power is applied to a main wheel in an X direction and the power transmission mechanism 40 idles in a Y direction when the power transmission mechanism 40 is in a first mode, and the rotatory power is applied to the main wheel in a Y direction and the power transmission mechanism 40 idles in an X direction when the power transmission mechanism 40 is in a second mode. The mode of the power transmission mechanism 40 is switched by a power transmission mode switch mechanism 70. The power transmission mode switch mechanism 70 has a switch member 72, a switch operation part 74 and a temporary engaging member. When the switch operation part 74 is at a first rotation direction position or a second rotation detection position, the temporary engaging member temporarily engages the switch operation part 74 and the lever 12 in the rotating direction of the switch operation part 74.
