A game system comprises a reader/writer unit (160) for transmitting/receiving data by radio to/from a radio tag (162) attached to a character item and performing read/write of data from/in the radio tag (162) and a game processing unit for transmitting/receiving data to/from the reader/writer unit (160), acquiring the data read from the radio tag (162) from the reader/writer unit (160), and performing game processing according to the acquired data. In the radio tag (162), credit data associated with the number of usable game plays and game parameters used for the game processing are stored. The game processing unit acquires the credit datafrom the radio tag (162) through the reader/writer unit (160), updates the credit data stored in the radio tag (162) if a predetermined condition is satisfied, and starts game processing after updating the credit data.
