The system (1) has an electrical machine (2) and a planetary gear (3) arranged between an internal combustion engine (4) and a switching transmission (5). The electrical machine operated as a generator is to and fro transferable between a non-short circuit operation and a short circuit operation by a switching device (8), such that electrical energy storage assigned to the electrical machine does not exceed allowable maximum voltage. The electrical machine is designed as permanent magnetically excited synchronous machine. An independent claim is also included for a method for operation of an electro-dynamic drive system of a vehicle in predetermined vehicle modes of operation.
