<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a means capable of easily and accurately measuring an amount of a fatty acid ester existing on a surface and in the vicinity of the surface of a magnetic recording medium. <P>SOLUTION: The magnetic recording medium has a magnetic layer via a non-magnetic layer or directly on a non-magnetic supporting body and comprises the fatty acid ester in the non-magnetic layer and/or the magnetic layer. In a method for measuring the amount of the fatty acid ester existing on the surface of the magnetic layer and in the vicinity of the surface of the magnetic layer, a total reflection absorption spectrum of the surface of the magnetic layer is obtained by using a Fourier transform IR spectrophotometer; then an organic solvent which can dissolve the fatty acid ester is brought into contact with the surface of the magnetic layer; then a total reflection absorption spectrum of the surface of the magnetic layer after the solvent brought into contact is obtained by using the Fourier transform IR spectrophotometer and difference between a peak area in a region from 2,700 cm<SP>-1</SP>to 3,000 cm<SP>-1</SP>absorption wavenumber in the spectrum before the solvent is brought into contact and a peak area in a region from 2,700 cm<SP>-1</SP>to 3,000 cm<SP>-1</SP>absorption wavenumber in the spectrum after the solvent is brought into contact is obtained as the amount of the fatty acid ester. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT</p> |
