PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polarization maintaining optical fiber that enables transmission loss thereof in a short wavelength region and bending loss thereof to be reduced. SOLUTION: The polarization maintaining optical fiber 14 includes a core 2b that contains a hydroxyl group with a concentration of 600-1,400 ppm, a clad 4b surrounding the core 2b, and a pair of stress imparting parts 12b that penetrate a part of the clad 4b and that are placed symmetrically about the core 2b and in parallel in the longitudinal direction of the core 2b.
