PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress an excessive current generated when a power source is turned on and a voltage surge of input and output of a matrix converter, in the matrix converter as a power converter which inputs a three-phase AC power source to obtain a three-phase AC power source of a desirable amplitude and frequency. SOLUTION: The matrix converter apparatus carries a voltage clamping type snubber circuit which is equipped with a resistor having both functions for suppressing the excessive currents generated when a power source is turned on and for discharging charges accumulated in a capacitor which absorbs the voltage surge generated at the input and output of the matrix converter.
