It is possible to provide a decoding device capable of improving a cache hit rate in a decoding process of image data which has been compressed/encoded. Prior to the decoding process, the decoding device generates a sort table for each of reference pictures for a plurality of MPEG data streams contained in a GOP and having a frame type P or B picture. By using the generated sort tables, the decoding device selects a picture group formed by a plurality of decoding object macro blocks which reference the same reference macro block. The decoding device acquires four macro blocks including the same reference macro block referenced by the selected picture group from the reference pictures and stores them in a cache memory. The decoding device successively decodes each of the macro blocks as decoding objects contained in the selected picture group by using the four macro blocks stored in the cache memory.
