<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electrode catalyst layer for a polymer electrolyte fuel cell with gas diffusion properties having a slanted distribution in a thickness or a film face direction against a polymer electrolyte membrane with mechanical strength maintained, and with a high effective utilization factor of catalyst, and to provide its manufacturing method and a polymer electrolyte fuel cell. <P>SOLUTION: A gas diffusion layer 2 is arranged on a flat-shape base material 3 structured in a pattern by a ferromagnetic material and a feeble magnetic material, and is directly coated with catalyst ink to form an electrode catalyst layer 1. This coating operation and a drying operation are carried out in a magnetic field with a flux density distribution, so that a pore-forming agent in the electrode catalyst layer 1 is to be endowed by magnetic force with a slanted distribution in a thickness direction or a membrane face direction against the polymer electrolyte membrane. Preferably, the catalyst ink is to have at least a kind of substance dissolved with a magnetization factor different from that of the pore-forming agent to increase a magnetization factor difference. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT |
