<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To shorten the waiting time for a passenger and to improve transportation efficiency. <P>SOLUTION: The elevator system has a plurality of linked elevator mechanisms 10a, 10b having cars 13a to 14b suspended on both ends of main ropes 12a, 12b. In the elevator system, an operation time characteristic, in which each of the cars of each linked elevator mechanism is stopped over a fixed period of time T<SB>S1</SB>at a different floor from the other car on floors 15 and 16, and thereafter, each of the cars is moved to the other floor of the floors 16 and 15 over a fixed moving time T<SB>M</SB>, is shifted between each of the linked elevator mechanisms 10a, 10b.
