PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for preventing or delaying the onset of diabetes with the use of a peptide antagonist of zonulin.

SOLUTION: The method for preventing or delaying the onset of diabetes comprises a step for administering a pharmaceutically effective amount of a peptide antagonist of zonulin to a test subject necessary to prevent or delay the onset of diabetes, and herein the peptide antagonist binds to the zonulia occludens toxin receptor, yet does not pharmaceutically modify the opening of mammalian tight junctions.
