An apparatus and a method for preventing shift shock in an automatic transmission is provided to quickly manage a failure by measuring a synchronized time and a shift time and comparing the difference value between them with a preset safety factor value. A shift force is calculated by sensing a signal of an actuator(10), and then a shift time is calculated by using the shift force of each corresponding shift stage and the operational variable value of a synchronizer. A load cell(20) is mounted on the actuator to calculate a synchronized time through calculation of the time which exceeds a predetermined load. It is determined whether the difference value between the synchronized time and the shift time exceeds a preset safety factor value, and if it exceeds the safety factor value, the shifting force is decreased.
