Specifically disclosed is a therapeutic and/or ameliorating agent comprising thrombomodulin as an active ingredient. The agent is administered to a patient having disseminated intravascular coagulation syndrome or sepsis in such a manner that the plasma thrombomodulin level becomes 200 ng/ml or more or 1.3 units/ml or more or the rate of inhibition of prothrombinase activity in the plasma can be maintained at 85% or more in the patient.
