The method involves filtering a lamp voltage signal having an attenuation different for a constant component and a component with a frequency of an alternating voltage. Positive and negative peak values of the filtered signal are determined by charging a positive storage capacitor based on a positive half cycle of the voltage signal and a negative storage capacitor based on a negative half cycle of the voltage signal. An average value of the peak values is determined, and compared with a limit value. A difference value of the peak values is determined, and compared with another limit value. An independent claim is also included for a device for monitoring an operation of a gas-discharge lamp at an alternating voltage.
