PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To quickly detect misregistration in a simple configuration so that the misregistration detection does not interfere in high speed copy when abnormality due to misregistration of a running body occurs. SOLUTION: An image reading apparatus for reading a document image by reciprocally moving first and second carriages 6 and 7 to a prescribed distance includes: a scanning drive mechanism for moving the first and second carriages 6 and 7 by a stepping motor 63; a home position sensor 60 provided at a prescribed position in the neighborhood of a home position and for detecting the first carriage 6; a clock counter 70 for counting a motor drive pulse from a stop state of the first carriage 6; a detection position setting/comparison circuit 72 for determining whether the first carriage 6 is moved normally during movement of the first carriage 6 by comparing a count value of the motor drive pulse counted by the clock counter 70 with the detection results of the home position sensor 60; and a CPU 80.
