The tacker for driving fasteners (40) into a workpiece (42) has a housing (12) on which a handle (14) is constructed, and a region (26) for holding the fasteners, and a mechanism (44) for ejecting the fasteners. A switching-off device (50a) is provided, which leads to deactivation of the ejecting mechanism when the quantity of fasteners present in the holding region falls below a minimum quantity. The switching-off device has a light barrier which detects the presence of fasteners. The switching-off device may include an electrical contact which can be closed via a magazine slide (34).
