PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a chain tensioner excellent in reliability of movement when vibrated at a high frequency. SOLUTION: This chain tensioner has a chain guide 8 swingably attached to an engine block, a cylindrical housing 12 inserted into a housing storage hole 11 formed into the chain guide, a screw rod 15 provided with, on its periphery, a male screw 16 threadedly engaged with a female screw 14 formed into the inner periphery of the housing, and a spring 23 energizing the screw rod. The female screw and male screw are formed such that the flank angle of a pressure side flank 15 receiving pressure with force in a direction pushing the screw rod into the housing acted is formed larger than the flank angle of a play side flank 18 receiving pressure with force in a direction projecting the screw rod from the housing acted, and the projecting end of the screw rod from the housing abuts on a stopper 10 fixed to the engine block to press down the chain guide to the chain 5.
