Thermal treatment of gases produced from carbonaceous substances to remove tars and hydrocarbons is carried out in packed bed of solids where gases and a judicious quantity of air react taking them through temperature peak largely removing polycyclic aromatics releasing hydrogen and carbon monoxide. The mixture is cooled e.g. in a waste heat boiler (13) to not more than 500 degrees C. Dust is removed by a filter (15). The mixture is introduced into a thermal storage unit packed with solids (21). Here its controlled oxygen content, introduced by an air line (18), is consumed by partial oxidation and condensable hydrocarbons become thermally cracked as the gas flows through the bed from inlet to outlet. The maximum temperature in the packing is 900-1500 degrees C. Inlet gas temperature is below the ignition point of the mixture and at least 200 degrees C under the maximum reached. The gas mixture leaves at least 200 degrees C below this maximum. Inlet and outlet zones of the packing, are interchangeable. Condensable hydrocarbons in the gas mixture are reduced to 20% at most, of those present at the inlet.
