PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress generation of an abnormal noise at deceleration or a time of racing in an internal combustion engine provided with a VVT capable of varying opening/closing timing of an exhaust valve and set so that the exhaust valve can be opened and closed earlier as compared with a conventional engine. SOLUTION: In an operation state other than an idle operation (in a traveling or racing state), when a throttle valve is fully closed (step ST13), the opening/closing timing of the exhaust valve is retarded by a prescribed angle relative to a most spark-advance angle (step ST14) to bring the closing timing of the exhaust valve close to exhaust TDC. With such an angle retarding control, exhaust gas is prevented from remaining in a cylinder of the engine in a compressed state and abrupt blowback to an intake manifold side at opening of an intake valve is prevented, and abnormal noise is prevented from occurring from an intake manifold.
