摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To eliminate the deviation in a fuel remaining ratio between a plurality of fuels. SOLUTION: The multi-fuel internal combustion engine is operated by changing fuel characteristic of fuel in the combustion chamber CC to become suitable for either a premixed spark ignition flame diffusive combustion mode, or compression self-ignition diffusive combustion mode by individually supplying or mixing and supplying a first fuel F1 having the high evaporability and low ignitability and a second fuel F2 having the high ignitability and low evaporability so as to be a prescribed fuel content in a combustion chamber CC. The engine is provided with a fuel remaining ratio adjusting means (an electronic control unit 1) for reducing a fuel supply ratio of the first fuel F1 and expanding a compression self-ignition diffusive combustion area besides curtailing a premixed spark ignition flame diffusive combustion area when a fuel remaining ratio of the first fuel F1 to the second fuel F2 is smaller than a specified value and on the other hand for raising the fuel supply ratio of the first fuel F1 and curtailing a compression self-ignition diffusive combustion area besides expanding the premixed spark ignition flame diffusive combustion area when the fuel remaining ratio is larger than the specified value.
