The method involves supplying a belt pretensioner (5) of a safety belt (1) with auxiliary force in a time period between determination of a critical driving condition and a crash-time point. The auxiliary force is exerted as a momentum, which is upstream to the crash-time point, in a thorax region of a vehicle passenger in a pre-crash-phase. The time period is divided into two time intervals, where the momentum is exerted on the safety belt in one of the time intervals and the force impulse is spaced from the crash-time point in the other time interval. An independent claim is also included for a restraint system for restraining a vehicle passenger on a vehicle seat.
