A method of diagnosing a start motor using a scan tool is provided to rapidly diagnosing an error of the start motor by diagnosing an error of a battery based on a battery voltage received in an on-state or a start-state of an ignition key, and then diagnosing the error of the start motor based on a rotational frequency of the engine in a normal battery state. A method of diagnosing a start motor using a scan tool comprises the step of connecting an engine-controlling unit to the scan tool. If a preset start motor diagnose condition and a battery diagnose condition are satisfied, a fuel injection and an ignition are stopped(103). The normalcy of the battery is determined based on a battery voltage received from the scan tool in an on-state or a start-state of an ignition key(114). If the battery represents a normal-state, a rotational frequency of an engine, which is provided from the scan tool and the engine controlling unit, is received for a predetermined time(115). After a predetermined time has lapsed, an error of the start motor is diagnosed and determined based on the rotational frequency of the engine(121).
