An installation for handling a pile or column 14 for its erection at a predetermined location from the bed SB of a volume of water, includes means 3 for locating the pile or column at said predetermined location. The installation further comprises gripper/support means/units 11 and (12, Fig 7) for physically engaging with the pile or column at a position offset from the region (17, Fig 5) of the centre of gravity of the pile or column, whilst the pile or column is floating in the water, and means for enabling the pile or column to tilt to a required orientation with respect to the said bed (SB). The means for locating the pile or column may comprise support means 9 and (8, Fig 7) which in turn support the gripper means so that the gripper means are able to travel up and down the support means to raise the pile or column to enable the tilting. |
