The data transmission system (10) has a stored program controller (20) and a data base mechanism (60) that are connected over a network. The stored program controller has a physical interface (50), a driver component (42) for controlling data communication over the network and another driver component (41) for controlling data exchange with the data base mechanism. The later driver component is implemented in the application level of the stored program controller. The later driver component contains a data base communication protocol.
