In a media communication session between user agents (14) via nodes (3) in a network, messages (42) comprising a header portion (34) configured to a first standard (eg. a media session initiation protocol SIP, 32) and a body portion (40) configured to a second standard which creates service function request methods (eg. Simple Object Access Protocol SOAP, 30) are transmitted. The header portion further comprises an ID portion (36) and an SIP request portion (38) of type INVITE, ACK, BYE, INFO etc. If the request type is INFO, the user agent's SOAP stack (30) reads any SOAP commands in the body portion (40). Providing SIP extension via the body portion of an SIP message rather than the header portion allows business/web service interoperability without departing from existing industry standards. Media sessions may be Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), instant messaging (SMS) or video sessions. |
